Revealed: Top 10 destinations for Muslim travellers

Muslim travellers should look East for the most favourable holiday destinations, according to a new survey focused on this big-spending consumer market.

The MasterCard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI), published today, found that Malaysia and Singapore rank among the top global destinations for Muslim travellers.

There were 117 million Muslim international travellers in 2015, according to the report. This is projected to grow to 168 million by 2020, when travel expenditure by Muslim travellers is expected to exceed $200 billion.

The second GMTI, covering 130 destinations, measured countries according to multiple factors including safety, Muslim-friendly services, halal awareness, air connectivity and visa restrictions.

Malaysia topped the list for the second year running, while Singapore was ranked highest among the non-OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) countries. The UK retained its position at number three among the non-OIC countries.

Asia and Europe are the two leading regions attracting Muslim visitors, accounting for 87 percent of the entire Muslim travel market, the report found.
